Early on
Even Steven Levee spent the second half of the 70’s touring the US and Canada with a few different bands (Life Source, Profile and Spectrum). By 1980 he returned home to the family farm in upstate New York, enjoying the country air and his favorite horse, Tom Sunday. His Dad then decided to sell the family farm and Even moved into the building where his new band ZRS were setup with a studio and an overflowing abundance of talent and personality. Even was also working with a few other bands including Lost At Home and Barbara Lee George. But as one thing led to another, Even eventually moved back into New York City area after his then latest 80’s band, Brad Factor:10 (the ten is silent) were crowned the winners of New York City’s 1988 Rock Wars. They most certainly did Have A Nice Day. The prize was recording time at one of NYC’s finest recording studios, Unique Recording. One of the icings on the cake was including Nite Bob Czaykowski (FOH Sound Man for Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin} to engineer the project. Unique’s owners, Joann and Bobby Nathan had taken Even under their wings and although the studio was actually in Time Square, it felt more and more to Even like he was in Heaven. It turned into a life changing move for Even. Unique Recording became his new home and his new Family of Friends, Musicians, Engineers and Producers. He began bringing in artists to work with providing his Bass, Production, and Song Writing Talents. Even eventually became a Unique Recording Studio Manager. Even had also become a club promoter and became famous for hosting his “No Wanka Jams” at the best rock clubs the city had to offer. Spodee Odee, Limelight, Danceteria/Rocketeria and Webster Hall were more than any musician could dream about.
It was all a dream come true until life caught up with Even. He had become disabled and in need of a very serious Cervical Spine Surgery. This set him back a bit until he finally found the best Neurosurgeons in New York, Dr. Raj Mauralli. During his 2 years of rehabilitation Even enrolled in a computer technical school and became an A+ Certified Windows Computer Technician in a DOS Enviroment and a Network Administrator. This led to Even living a dual life in IT and Music. He began turning his apartment into his home recording studio where he was able to continue working with his Unique friends and the new clients he picked up along the way. His Unique Writing Partner, Arthur Steuer and Even had been getting very busy. They performed a hip-hop song they wrote for a German Producer Rainer Preuss. They were hoping Rainer would place their song with one of his artists. He had been working here in the US with the artists he had signed to WEA Records. Arthur and Even were considered very talented and very funny. They probably should have been a comedy team. Rainer was completely overwhelmed with their song and their act. Rainer wanted in on the project. Rainer Co-Produced the song with them= and thought they should be the artist. Their song Big Ol Boom Boom was destined to be a hit, especially after adding their friend and vocalist Wrecia Ford to the project. They needed a name, and this is what led to the creation of i-Potato and of course later on, the formation of their indie label, i-Potato Music. Even always considered Wrecia the mother of i-Potato because her vibe was amazing, and they now had the “IT” Factor on their side. Rainer’s company was suddenly heading back too Germany. They wanted i-Potato to join. Even was still not quite up to traveling and Arthur was not going to go without Even. Wrecia Ford on the other hand, did take the trip, with Even and Arthurs blessing of course. 30 years later Wrecia is still in Germany tearing it up. She had come back a number of times to sing on projects Even was producing. This included the two-protest song he created with Joe Butler (Lovin’ Spoonful), Count The Vote and Save America. Even also produced Where Have You Gone? (The Robin Hood Song) for the polition Bill Murawski, a man who is now a Pro-SE Tenant and Voting Rights Advocate. i-Potato Music continued to work. They produced and released music for a number of artists including Gun Hill, The MC Magic D, TRP and RollXtra (Cause We Gonna Smoke). Even also produced Barbara Lee George, songwriter Charlie Lang’s first album Turn The Music On, and wrote songs and played Bass with Hedy McDonald (for her album, With Style. The project was of course recorded at Unique). Hedy was managed by Morty Craft. Even’s old friend. Even was again introduced to Morty at Unique Recording Studio and their friendship flurished.
Morty originally worked with Even and his early 70’s band Life Force. (Life Force included Frank Filipetti, Froc, Deborah Stone, Rich Bora, Bart Zazzali, Tommy Mandel and of course Even (aka Steven Levee)) Morty release their song Holy Moses (in Scottland) on his label Streaker Records, in an effort to get things going after their deal with Paramount Records fell off the table. This was due to the 1974 Energy Crisis (Vinyl is a petroleum by-product and all labels were directed by the government to drop 25% of their recorded artists). Paramount Records folded and Life Force wanted to move on and change management. Paramounts VP of Artist and Repertoire, Chuck Gregory, brought Morty in to help with the transition. Gregory was attempting to move the group over to Warner Bros. They brought the bands current manager Lynn Barkley in to negotiate but things got hot and he steamed out. Morty decided to help move things forward and released Holy Moses on his label, Streaker records. He “mistakenly” changed the name of the band on his 1974 release to “Force”. Their current manager released Holy Moses in 1975 under the band name “Saratoga Trunk” on the United Artist Records France label. He also changed the name of the writer from Filipetti to Siliketti. The band did not even know this was going on. Four of the bandmates decided to blow off some steam and they hit the road for a three month tour using the name Life Source. It turned into almost 1.5 years of constant touring. Ater the band broke up Even went home to his family farm. He was there for about one day when the phone rang, and he was on a jet back to Cincinatti the next morning. This led to another almost 3.5 years of constant touring with the Blue Eyed Soul Group The Profile Band.
